Wishful Drinking brings the unique sensibilities of actress/author Carrie Fisher to HBO via a 76-minute adaptation of her acclaimed one-woman stage production. Barbary Pirate

A series of pirate boardings of merchant ships in the Mediterranean Sea prompts the United States State Department to send Major Tom Blake (Donald Woods, True Grit) on a secret mission aimed at stopping the extortion being perpetrated by Yusof, the Bey of Tripoli (Stefan Schnabel, Houdini, Journey into Fear). When saving the Bey’s life puts Blake in his good graces, he learns that the African ruler has a confidante inside the State Department who is telegraphing confidential information about U.S. ships in the region. But after refusing to sign a treaty offered by the United States, the Bey ignores threats of an invasion and orders all Americans in Tripoli imprisoned and executed, forcing Blake to escape and take on the chieftain in order to save lives and end the attacks. This 1880s pirate-espionage adventure was directed by veteran Columbia helmer Lew Landers (Alias Boston Blackie, The Power of the Whistler), and features Trudy Marshall and Lenore Aubert as damsels in distress. Key Witness

Henpecked husband Milton Higby (John Beal) is a nice enough fellow, but he daydreams about his novelty inventions while at work, and never seems to get ahead. When his wife goes out of town, pal Larry (Jimmy Lloyd) seizes the chance to show Milton a good time, introducing him to the race track, and an attractive, appreciative Sally Guthrie (Helen Mowery). A few drinks too many one night, and poor Milton is in a spot… he wakes up in Sally’s apartment to find her dead, and the neighbors are pounding on the door. Milton flees for the open road, and when he comes across a dead body, decides to steal the man’s identity. Milton’s wife and Larry are determined to prove Milton’s innocence, but their continued investigations threaten his new life. This relatively unknown noir film is the definition of a “B� picture, with little-known actors, and efficient (though somewhat absurd) plotting. The twists and turns are break-neck, and fans of the genre will delight in this strange and wonderful example of the post-war film style where fate and chance are in the driver’s seat... but don’t blame us for the less-than-satisfactory ending! Newly remastered.

Love and Human Remains (1993)

This modern, dark comedy is about people searching for love and family in an era where relationships are not as clearly defined as either hetero or homosexual. The film focuses on roommates/ex-lovers David (Thomas Gibson, TV’s “Dharma and Greg� and “Criminal Minds�), a cynical actor-turned-waiter, and Candy (Ruth Marshall), an ever-hopeful book reviewer, and their hilarious, often-poignant entanglements with a psychic dominatrix (Mia Kirshner, The Black Dahlia and TV’s “The L Word�), a bartender (Rick Roberts), a lesbian schoolteacher (Joanne Vannicola), a seventeen-year-old busboy (Matthew Ferguson), and a misogynistic yuppie (Cameron Bancroft). All of this takes place within an urban landscape where a serial killer is attacking young women.
