Using the right kinds of keywords is a crucial part of optimizing and increasing the traffic to your site. In every area of ecommerce, whether it is electronics or clothing the relevance and popularity of your keywords effects how people find your site.

Most businesses put a great deal of effort into ensuring that they are near the top of their respective fields for the products they offer. As a result most have a selection of finely honed keywords which they utilize all year round to boost their traffic. However there are benefits to utilizing seasonal keywords to boost your traffic to correspond with seasonal trends and potentially boost your conversions.

Seasonal keywords of course refer to those searches that pop up only at certain times of the year. At Christmas for example someone has a far greater tendency to use the word "gift" as part of their search. As a result it makes sense to take advantage of these seasonal changes. If a company specializes in selling CD's and DVD's for example, then they could take advantage by employing the keyword "CD gifts" or "DVD presents". These searches are far less common and as a result are rarely optimized for, putting those who latch onto the idea at an advantage. However there are a few elements that must be considered before employing this.

Firstly, you must know your market. A web designer will tailor your site for your market so SEO that doesn't is worthless. It's important to ensure that if you are using seasonal keywords that they are not misleading. Ensure that you conduct an in depth analysis of potential keywords related to your industry before employing them. Secondly, and most importantly time your optimization for these seasonal keywords well. Anyone with a good knowledge of SEO is well aware of the fact that it is not an instantaneous process. For keywords to start making a difference you have to spend time optimizing for these keywords and it will take time for your site to see any results. Optimize too late and you'll have wasted a great deal of time and effort.

Finally, don't optimize for seasonal trends year round. Doing this is only worthwhile as a seasonal boost for your business. An add-on if you will. The most important thing is to ensure that your site is being optimized effectively for your standard keywords. That is how you bring in traffic all year.
